Record a Skill is a Claude feature that turns a screen recording into a reusable AI skill. You record yourself doing a task while explaining it out loud, and Claude turns that demonstration into instructions it can follow again on similar work, without you writing a prompt or building an automation.
Anthropic added Record a Skill to the Claude desktop app in late July 2026, available to Pro, Max and Team subscribers. It sits under the plus menu: Skills, Manage skills, Add, Record your screen. You hit record, work through the task normally on your own files, say what you are doing and why as you go, then stop. Claude turns the recording into a structured skill it can run again on similar requests.
This matters for small teams because the usual blocker on AI adoption is not access, it is translation. Someone knows exactly how they reconcile an invoice or format a weekly report, but turning that into a written prompt or an automation feels like a separate technical job, so it never gets done. Record a Skill removes that step. You show the work once, in your own words, and the documentation writes itself.
The practical use is training your best person's method into something the rest of the team can reuse. Have your strongest operator record how they actually do a recurring task, the real one, on real files, not a sanitised example. That recording becomes a skill anyone on a paid seat can call on, which is a faster way to spread a good habit than a written SOP nobody rereads.
Treat it like any screen recording: do not narrate passwords, API keys, or client data you would not want stored, and check the resulting skill on a low-stakes example before you trust it on something that matters.
