Is Notion AI Worth It for a Small Team? An Honest Look

Notion's 2026 pricing has four tiers: Free, Plus at $10 per member a month (billed annually, $12 month to month), Business at $20 per member a month (billed annually, $24 month to month), and custom-priced Enterprise. Full Notion AI, meaning the AI Agents, the Ask Notion Q&A tool, AI connectors to outside apps, model selection across providers, and meeting transcription, is bundled into Business and Enterprise only. Free and Plus users get a small number of lifetime AI responses and nothing more.

That is a change from how Notion used to sell it. AI used to be a $10-a-month add-on any plan could buy. Notion retired that standalone add-on and folded full AI into the Business tier, so a team that was paying $10 for Plus plus $10 for the AI add-on now pays the same $20 a seat, but only on Business, with no option to keep the cheaper base plan and add AI separately.

Custom Agents are a separate, newer layer on top of the AI already included in Business: agents you configure to run a defined job, like drafting a weekly status update from a project database, on a schedule or a trigger rather than one chat message at a time. They run on Notion Credits, priced at $10 per 1,000 credits, with 300 credits included free per workspace each month and no rollover of unused credits.

A single agent run typically costs somewhere in the low single-digit credits depending on the model and how many tools it calls, so a simple agent running a few dozen times a month stays inside the free allowance or close to it. A team building several agents that run often will burn through the free credits and start paying on top of the Business seat price, which is the detail that catches teams who budgeted only for the per-seat cost.

The real advantage is that it already knows your workspace. Instead of copying a paragraph into a separate AI chat window and pasting the answer back, the assistant drafts and edits inside the page it is already looking at, and Ask Notion can pull an answer from your own project pages, meeting notes, and databases rather than a general knowledge base. For a team that already lives in Notion for docs and project tracking, that removes a genuinely annoying step from daily work.

It is also reasonably good at the boring first-draft work: turning a rough meeting note into a clean summary, drafting a status update in a format you have already set, or explaining what a messy page is actually saying. None of that is unique to Notion, but having it sit inside the tool the team already opens every day is what makes people actually use it, rather than leaving a separate AI tab unopened.

Ask Notion's biggest limitation is that Notion itself does not claim it can properly search or reason across the relationships inside a structured database. A project tracker, a CRM-style database, or a content calendar with linked relations is exactly the kind of content Ask Notion is weakest at using, which undercuts the pitch of it as a single search box over your whole workspace. Like any AI assistant built on a large language model, it can also answer confidently and be wrong, so anything that feeds a decision still needs a person to check the source page, not just trust the summary.

The other real cost is organizational, not financial. Notion AI's drafting and Q&A features are only as good as the workspace underneath them: a business with years of half-abandoned pages, inconsistent naming, and no clear owner per database will get worse answers than a team with a tidy, current workspace, and cleaning that up is real work the AI does not do for you.
