OpenAI's ChatGPT for Small Business, explained

OpenAI announced the program on July 21, 2026, joining Microsoft, Google and Anthropic in a push for the small business AI budget. The pitch is the same everywhere: owners have already started using AI on their own, one subscription at a time, but most stop at drafting an email or summarising a document. OpenAI's bet is that free training closes that gap faster than a better model does on its own.

The program itself is straightforward. There are free virtual webinars walking through ChatGPT Work on accounting, marketing and ecommerce tasks, in-person OpenAI Academy events in the US with hands-on exercises, written guides and short customer-story videos, plus integrations and special offers from partners including Shopify and Intuit. None of these pieces are new inventions on their own. Bundling them into one on-ramp, timed right after OpenAI said ChatGPT Work and Codex had already reached 10 million users, is the actual news.

Treat it the way you would treat any vendor-run training: useful for the basics, not a substitute for training built around your own workflows. A generic webinar can show a bookkeeper how ChatGPT reads a spreadsheet. It cannot tell your team which of your specific tasks are worth automating first, or what data should never go into a prompt. Use OpenAI's program to get comfortable with the tool, then bring in someone who knows your business to turn that comfort into an actual routine.
