What Claude Projects do that a normal chat does not

A Project is a self-contained workspace inside Claude.ai with its own chat history and its own knowledge base, separate from your regular conversations. Instead of one long undifferentiated chat log, you get a folder for a specific piece of work, say client onboarding, or your Q4 marketing plan, where every conversation inside it shares the same background material.

That structure is the whole point. A normal chat only knows what you type into it that session. A Project remembers what you have already told it, permanently, across every new conversation you start inside that workspace.

You upload documents, code or reference material once into a Project's knowledge base, and Claude reads them automatically on every chat you have inside it from then on. A regular chat has no equivalent: close the tab and the context is gone.

By default, a Project draws on the same context window as a regular Claude.ai chat: 200K tokens on a paid plan, about 500 pages of text, before anything else changes. On Pro and Max plans, Claude also applies retrieval when your uploads get close to that limit, pulling in only the relevant sections rather than cutting you off, which Anthropic says can expand usable capacity by up to 10x.

Beyond the files, each Project has its own instructions field: a standing brief that applies to every chat inside that workspace. Tell it to always answer in a formal tone, or to respond as if it were your head of operations, and that framing carries into every new conversation in the Project without you retyping it.

This is what turns Claude from a general assistant into something closer to a specialist who already knows your business: the tone, the role and the reference material are set once at the workspace level, not re-supplied per chat.

Projects are not a paid add-on. Free Claude.ai accounts can create up to five Projects with the standard knowledge base and instructions. Pro and Max accounts get the retrieval boost described above, useful once your documents start pushing past the base context window.

On Team and Enterprise plans, a Project can be shared with colleagues under 'Can view' or 'Can edit' permissions, so a whole team works from one shared knowledge base and one set of instructions instead of everyone pasting the same background into their own separate chats.
